Understanding the dental insurance lingo
Administrator: Someone who manages a dental benefit program on behalf of the program’s sponsor.
Copayment: The amount that the beneficiary must pay at the time of check-up.
Coverage: The benefits open to those who are insured with a dental benefit plan.
Exclusions: Dental services not covered under a dental benefit program.
Deductible: This is the service amount that the patient pays before your dental coverage starts to cover it.
Network: Is a dentist who agrees to be “in network” with insurance companies. This network agrees and accepts a set of fees that is determined by the dental coverage. Your carrier will typically give you a list of providers that meet their standards of accepted fees.
Maximum Benefit: Defined as the total dollar amount that a program will pay for the cost of dental care acquired by you, or an individual under your plan, usually in a calendar year.
Premium: This is the cost that you will pay on a monthly basis for dental coverage.
Waiting Period: A period of time a person must be enrolled in to become eligible for benefits.
