If you have experienced swollen or sore gums, you know how distracting and unpleasant it can be. When you notice your gums feel painful or appear irritated, you should schedule an appointment with your dentist. They will be able to detect the underlying issue and treat it.

There are many reasons you might be experiencing gum swelling or pain. Sometimes braces or dentures can irritate gums. For women, hormonal changes seen with pregnancy, menopause or menstruation could be the cause. Gums are also sensitive to pressure; you may be brushing too hard.

While you are waiting to see your dentist, these suggestions may help to soothe sore gums:

  • Make sure your toothbrush has soft or extra soft bristles.
  • Rinse out your mouth with warm salt water.
  • Take over the counter pain medication, like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, as directed.

If gum pain, swelling, bleeding, pain while you chew, or other symptoms persist, be sure to tell your dentist during your visit. These could be signs of gum disease or other issues that should be treated professionally.

To keep gums healthy, be sure to brush (gently) twice per day, floss once a day and visit your dentist regularly.
