Relishing in the sun isn’t just fun and relaxing – it also provides a healthy dose of vitamin D! That’s good for both your overall health and your oral health – as long as you’re taking the proper precautions to protect your skin (and lips). Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Calcium has great health benefits, including strengthening bones and teeth, but to absorb that calcium, your body needs enough Vitamin D.

With enough calcium and vitamin D:

  • helps reduce bone loss over time
  • may decrease your chances of losing teeth

Not getting enough calcium could increase your risk for osteoporosis, which has been shown to weaken jaws and lead to tooth loss.

So how do you make sure your body gets the vitamin D it needs?

  • UVB rays from sunlight
  • Vitamin D supplements
  • Foods which naturally contain vitamin D, including cheese, egg yolks, beef liver and fatty fish like tuna, mackerel and salmon

So, feel good about getting out and enjoying the sun! Just make sure to apply plenty of sunscreen and lip balm with an SPF 30+ rating to protect your skin and lips from sunburn.
