Back-to-school is here! Though it comes at the same time every year, it always seems to creep up out of nowhere, and when you finally realize it, you are somehow behind. But don't worry - there is still time to prepare and set your student up for success. As you check off your school supply list, don’t forget that a healthy smile is a part of school readiness.

1) While you’re shopping for pencils, calculators and folders, stop in the oral health aisle and allow your child to pick a new toothbrush and even their own toothpaste flavor. Kids who are able to make their own choices feel empowered and are more likely to use their new brushing supplies. Be sure the toothpaste contains fluoride to help keep teeth strong and decrease the risk of cavities.

2) Along with their new toothbrush, consider getting your child a water bottle to bring to school and encourage them to refill it throughout the day using the drinking fountain. Drinking water helps your child to stay hydrated and alert throughout the school day, and the majority of public water supplies contain fluoride to provide extra protection for your child's teeth.

3) Schedule a dental visit. Regular dental visits are an important way to keep your child’s teeth healthy and stay ahead of dental issues.
4) Remind your child to brush their teeth every day, twice a day (yes, even on the weekends 😉) and floss once daily. Add in a little fun like having a calendar with stickers for tracking, and use a timer or 2-minute video to help your child brush for the entire recommended time.

5) Choose tooth-friendly school snacks such as:
- Cut up cheese and crackers
- Celery and/or carrot sticks
- Cucumber slices +/- dipping sauce/salad dressing
- Melon cubes
- A banana
- Trail mix or granola
- Apple slices or orange sections
- Berries

6) For youth involved in contact sports, have them use a mouthguard to protect their teeth. Remind your child/teen to wear their mouthguard anytime they play- even during practice. Also, be sure they rinse the mouthguard before and after use, and store it in a case so it doesn't get damaged or lost and stays clean.
Have a safe, healthy and fun school year!
