You brush your teeth every day. It’s a routine you probably could do in your sleep, right? But have you ever thought about keeping your toothbrush clean?

You may defeat the purpose of brushing if your toothbrush isn’t clean. Researchers have found that our mouths are a harbor of hundreds of different types of microorganisms – some of which can be transferred to your toothbrush. Just to be safe, the American Dental Association recommends that consumers replace toothbrushes every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles become frayed.

Here are some other tips for toothbrush care:

  • Don’t share your toothbrush: Bacteria in your mouth can be shared with users of a toothbrush, placing the people involved at higher risk of infections.
  • Rinse your toothbrush with tap water after use: Remove any remaining toothpaste and debris from your brush.
  • Store your toothbrush in an upright position: Allow the brush to air dry until used again. If more than one brush is in the same container or area, keep them separate to avoid cross-contamination.
  • Don’t cover your toothbrush or store it in a closed container: This creates a moist environment that is more conducive to the growth of microorganisms.
