Smiling tooth with toothbrush

We all have them, we all use them and (hopefully) we all brush them. But what do we really know about them? Check out these five facts you probably don’t know about your teeth:

Enamel is harder than bones

In fact, enamel is the hardest part of your body. Enamel is the protective layer that surrounds your teeth, allowing you to chew food and protecting your teeth from breaks and chips. The enamel layer is very thin, so to keep your enamel protecting your teeth, you need to protect your enamel – brush thoroughly and regularly.

First in, first out

Often, the order in which baby teeth come in determines the order in which they fall out. Usually, that means the two bottom front teeth go first, followed by the two top front.

A lot of your tooth is under your gums

Approximately one-third of your tooth's surface lives underneath your gums, which is why brushing at the gumline is so important.

Not everyone has wisdom teeth

It’s not unheard of to miss a wisdom tooth or two, but some people don’t have any at all. Why? Evolution – and an “ancient mutation” – may be the reason.
